One of the oldest buildings in Ryde possibly dating back to the C17 about
contemporary with the "Rose and Crown" in Newport. Three storeys timber
frame, weatherboarded to rear. The first and second floors on the High
Street front are hung with mathematical tiles, the ground floor is
Edwardian red brick. Gable end old tile roof eaves cornice. The side
wall, to the North, is of rubble in its upper part. Three windows
second floor, slightly recessed, sash, glazing bars intact. Two
early C19 bay windows either side of first floor centre window. Three
lights each, glazing bars intact, with pilasters frieze and cornice,
panelled apron to left hand one. The ground floor has a central segment
headed doorway with an Edwardian shop front to the right with panelled
pilasters, facia board and cornice and to the left a small bar front
of the same date with central door flanked by frosted plate glass windows
with segmental heads. The house has traditional associations with
smugglers and contains a secret staircase.
