Denys

GV II


Lyth gate. Dated 1883, Limestone ashlar with plain-tile roof. High Victorian
style. Elevation to road has double-stepped pointed arch with roll moulding and
pairs of shafts with foliated capitals. Gable parapet with crocket decoration
and finial has coat of arms in quatrefoil surrounded by foliage. Inscription in
arch "Death is the gate of Life". Rear, similar but plainer, has Latin
inscription with date in gable. Side elevations each of 2-window range of small
lancets with the castellated parapets above having central gargoyles. Buttresses
between windows, those at the corners with gabled copings. Interior has tiled
floor and plain rib vaulted roof with inscription at springing level, "When a
few years are come then I shall go away when I shall not return.
Job.XV.1.CH.22V.". Pair of wrought iron gates.
