Large house. Early C19, partly remodelled in the late C19, rear right wing possibly
C18 or earlier in part. Colourwashed and rendered; slate roof, hipped to main range,
gabled at ends of rear wings; brick stacks.
The early C19 plan may have been bow-fronted: an oval entrance hall probably dates
from this period, with principal rooms to left and right and a large stair hall with
an open well stair behind the oval room. Rear left and right wings form a U-plan,
originally with a narrow rear courtyard which has C20 single-storey infill. The rear
right wing, presumably the main service and kitchen wing, extends further back in 2
adjoining ranges which probably pre-date the early C19. In the late C19 the main
range was refronted.
2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front with deep eaves with paired brackets, chamfered
rusticated quoins and 2-storey bays on either side of a central porch. The front is
nicely-detailed with a Corinthian porch with smooth columns and pilasters, a 6-panel
front door with a panelled soffit to the doorcase and a glazed lunette. The ground
floor bay windows are round-headed 2-pane sashes with faceted keystones and recessed
panels in the spandrels; the first floor bay windows are segmental-headed 2-pane
sashes with keystones. The windows are all divided by pilasters with Corinthian
capitals; first floor centre window is a 2-pane sash with a keystone. The
fenestration of the wings is mostly hornless sashes.
Interior A number of good internal features. The oval entrance hall has a plaster
wall frieze and central plaster motif, the principal rooms on either side also have
plaster friezes, the right-hand room has a round-headed wall recess and a C19 chimney
piece. The fine open well stair has stick balusters and a ramped handrail. Other
joinery includes numerous doors with 6 fielded panels.
A very unaltered early and late C19 house with good interior and exterior detail.
