14/208 Marledge Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Mid-to late C17, with probably C18 and late C19 additions. Roughly
squared and coursed sandstone to ground floor and end walls. Rendered cob to first
floor and cob below eaves to gable ends. Some C19 red-brick dressings to rear lean-
to outshut. Gable-ended asbestos-slate roof. Corrugated asbestos over lean-to
outshut at rear. Rendered stone and brick stacks.
Plan and development: C17 two-room central entrance plan, facing south. Integral end
stacks. Central shallow rectangular projection to entrance lobby, and central
staircase rising from the entrance lobby. Cob beneath eaves is probably part of the
C17 construction but could possibly be evidence of later raised eaves. Probably C18
or C19 short kitchen wing at rear of right-hand end and C19 lean-to outshut at rear
of left-hand. Minor C19 internal alterations to left-hand ground-floor room and
entrance lobby. Two storeys with one-storey lean-to outshut.
Exterior: Almost symmetrical three-bay front; mid-to late C19 three-light wooden
casements to right and left and first-floor C19 two-light wooden casement to central
projection. Central C20 half-glazed boarded door. Central first-floor C17 leaded 2-
light wooden casement at rear, lighting top of staircase. C19 lean-to with internal
brick lateral stack. C19 two-light-wooden casement and C19 boarded door to side,
both with brick segmental heads.
Interior: Right-hand ground-floor room with plastered C17 chamfered cross beam. C17
open fireplace with splayed dressed sandstone jambs, chamfered wooden lintel with
stepped runout stops and C19 bread oven with cast-iron door. C17 cupboard in wall to
right of fireplace with two 4-panelled doors and bench below. Window seat to front.
C19 four-panelled door to cupboard below stairs. Left-hand ground-floor room
remodelled in the late C19, when it was enlarged by taking some space from the
entrance lobby. Pair of boxed cross beams. C19 four-panelled doors into each room
from entrance lobby. Central C19 one-flight staircase (probably replacing former C17
staircase). First-floor rooms and roof-space not inspected.
