House. Circa 1900. Possibly by Prentice. Squared limestone with stone slate
roof. Two storeys. Windows are rebated and chamfered with mullions. At the
left is one bay which has 2-light windows. To its right is a canted bay window
which has four lights with a transom at the front and two lights to each side,
and has a dentilled cornice below a parapet with coping. Above under a gable
are two 3-light windows with trasoms, and a carved initial "W". Set back at
the right is a first floor link to East House (qv) which has a double-chamfered
two-centred archway on the ground floor and a 4-light window above. Top Farmhouse
was bought by Mr Wells, the inventor of Quaker Oats, circa 1900. The house has
since been sub-divided and his extensions now form Knap House. (Houghton, CC:
A Walk About Broadway, 1980).
