Lower Hendre

GV II

Farmhouse. Probably C17 with C18, C19 and C20 alterations. Sandstone
rubble, squared sandstone, concrete tiled roofs and brick stacks. Irregular
plan with main range aligned roughly east/west. Cross-wing at east end and
smaller wing returning to north from west end. Two storeys and attic.
South elevation has 2:1 windows, 2-light late C20 casements under segmental
heads. Two late C20 canted bay windows to left of entry which is under
early C20 canopy in angle between main range and gable front. Attic window
of gable is 3-light early C19 casement. Low two-storey extension with hipped
roof to left-hand side. North elevation has left gable front with two partly
blocked openings, one to each storey on right-hand side. The lower opening,
to right of glazed early C20 kitchen door, has two oak diamond section mullions.
Centre of main range has 3-light late C18 to early C19 first floor casement
and 6-panelled contemporary door,both under segmental heads. Interior has
heavy chamfered ceiling beams to ground floor. Trusses not inspected.
Surprisingly, despite a very deep plinth on falling ground, the building has
no cellars. (RCHM Vol I, p 218). Included for group value.
