4/145 The Old Rectory

GV II

Rectory, now House in garden. Mid cl8, and added rear wing, dated
J S C R 1845, on north gable wall. Stone walls, rendered. Slate
roofs with parallel ridges. 2 rear ridges with composite brick
stacks in the valley. 2 storeys and attics. 6 windows (5 and 1)
sashes with glazing-bars, C20 replacements. Stone window surrounds
and cills. One bay added at left hand, c.1900. 3 2-light casements
for the dormers with hipped slate roofs, C20. Front door at original
centre, with 9 glass lights, Cl9, Wooden trelliswork porch with
flared lead roof, C19. Rear wing, at right angles, 2 storeys, 2
windows, 2-light cast-iron casements with many glazing-bars, mid Cl9.
Bellcote on rear ridge, very small wooden structure. Interior of
main house: flagstones to central hall, fielded-panel doors and
Window-shutters. The house was the home of the C20 painter, engraver
and letterer Reynolds Stone, born 1909, died 1979. Buried in
Litton churchyard (headstone).
