Corner terraced town house. C. 1725 by William Barlow, junior, brick
layer, some alterations early to mid C.19 and internally early C.20.
Brown brick with banded stucco ground floor, slate roof. 3 storeys,
basement and dormered mansard. 3 windows wide. Right hand of ground
floor has protruding stucco corridor along flank of adjoining No. 88
Brook Street, terminating in angled antae porch - probably early C.19
alteration. Recessed sashes, glazing bars intact to upper floors, in
stucco reveals with red brick dressings and under cambered gauged
arches, with blind boxes on 1st floor. Parapet with coping. 1st
floor cast iron balcony. Irregular 3 window return with chimney
stacks. Wrought iron area railings. Interior mostly early to later
C.19 decoration with oval top lit rear chamber on ground floor etc.
The House was the residence of John Adams,first U.S. Ambassador to the
Court of St. James's 1785-88. One of only 4 houses surviving mid C.20
rebuild of square and the only one to substantially retain its
original exterior.
