House, latterly bakery, with former shop and cottage. Probably early C18 house,
altered in the early C19 when shop and cottage were probably added or rebuilt.
Rendered over stone rubble and cob. Gable-ended scantle-slate roof, hipped round
corner. C20 bitumen covering on roof over cottage and part of shop. C20 asbestos
slate roof to rear wing. Early C18 dressed stone stack with weatherings and C19 red-
brick stacks.
Plan and development: L-plan. C18 house to rear, facing north-east. Consisting of
central principal room with staircase to rear, former kitchen to left with integral
stack to front, and unheated inner room to right. L-plan shop range added to east,
with integral end stack to right (north) and one-room plan rear wing. Two-room plan
cottage adjoining to south, with axial stack to right-hand room backing onto central
entrance passage and integral end stack to left. Two storeys.
Exterior: Asymmetrical front to house wtih first-floor 16-pane boxed glazing bar
sash. Pair of ground-floor doors under single segmental head, early C19 door to left
with 6 beaded flush panels and old boarded door to right with strap hinges. Further
small 2-leaf boarded door to right. Right-hand end of range with large projecting
bread oven. Shop with pair of first-floor early C19 boxed 16-pane glazing bar sashes
and ground-floor early C19 shop front consisting of 2 small-paned flat-roofed square
bay windows and central recessed pair of half-glazed doors, with beaded flush lower
panels, and panelled wall to right. Roofs of bays carried across to form porch.
Cottage to left with symmetrical 2-window front; C19 two-light small-paned wooden
casements and central C20 half-glazed door.
Interior: Left-hand ground-floor room of house at rear has C18 cupboard to left of
fireplace with H-L hinges. C18 cupboard to right-hand walll with raised and fielded
panels, window seat to rear, and early C19 four-panelled door to staircase (rising at
rear of central room). Central ground-floor room with rough chamfered spine beam.
Early C19 staircase with stick balusters and turned newel to landing. Ground-floor
room in rear wing of shop has fireplace with wooden lintel and and first-floor room
has early C19 reeded chimney-piece with roundels at corners. Interior of cottage not
inspected but plastered cross beam noted.
This range of buildings stands on a prominent corner site in North Molton, facing
onto The Square and the North Heasley road.
