C13, C15 and C16, remodelled C19/20. Two storeys, rubble stone with some
ashlar work. Most windows C19, stone mullioned and transomed, with arched
lights and hoodmoulds. Tiled roofs. Present house L-shaped formed from
west range of cloisters and Abbots Lodging. Notley Abbey was founded circa
1162 by Walter Giffard, Earl of Buckingham for Augustinian Canons. Parts
of grounds scheduled Ancient Monuments.
