House, now a museum. Early C16 or earlier. High quality, small,
timberframed 2 storeys domestic structure with gabled thatched
roof. Possibly once part of a larger building. Surviving fine
upper room spanned by crown post roof, and addition in C17 of
brick W front with 4-light ovolo mullioned brick window to upper
floor, and large E chimney with 2 octagonal shafts and 3-centre
brick arched fireplaces on each floor, suggests its continued use
as guest lodgings. It is narrow and its axis is N-S, which makes
it unlikely that the lower thatched timberframed and plastered
addition on the S replaced an earlier open hall in the later C17.
It was probably added c.1688 when the Hall was reduced in size
and became a farm. The oven beside the Ground floor fireplace
was probably added then, and the ceiling and partitions on the
upper floor. Pegholes in the wall plate show that the older
building was close-studded. Two and a half bays original roof
structure with short bay for stair. 2 bay miniscule crown post
roof with evidence for curved braces to central truss collar,
supporting collar purlin. Square crown post each end with solid
knee-brace to collar purlin. Plank doors externally. Cast iron
diamond lattice to window on W beside door. Fragments of C17
moulded panelling in stair partition on 1st floor. Workmanship
of very high quality. Probably the earliest domestic building
surviving at Hadham Hall. Part of the group of historic
