579-1/5/140 Shelter at TQ 274 044

GV II

Seafront shelter. Mid C19, reseated and restored late C20.
Built by Hove Corporation. Painted cast-iron with glazed
panels. Plan: angular U-shaped ends to central spine. SIngle
storey, flat roof concealed behind parapet pierced with
quatrefoil decoration and carrying ball finials, decorative
cornice to deep overhanging eaves carried on shaped brackets
springing from cast-iron columns, dado panels with relief
decoration in the form of a ship - the symbol of Hove.
Mullions between the columns sustain the frosted glass panels.
Late C20 slatted benches. One of a group of seafront shelters.
