Memorial to Joseph Hamlyn, d.1864 and other members of the
Hamlyn family. c1864. Polished and unpolished granite;
cast-iron railings. Greek Revival style. Plan: pedestal
monument enclosed by contemporary cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: pedestal gabled on all 4 sides with a draped urn on
top. Moulded base and plinth, sides decorated with inscription
shields with curled upper corners. Corbelled gables with
friezes of decoration including Greek key pattern, gables
decorated with sacred monograms. Surrounding cast-iron
railings with cusped ogee and semi-circular rails with
decorated finials and square section corner standards with
moulded bases and finials. Historical note: the Hamlyn family
were woollen mill owners in Buckfastleigh and responsible for
building the town hall and extensive housing for their
workforce in the town. One of the adjacent memorials (not
included) is to the Callard family, also Buckfastleigh
millowners.
