House, probably one building phase originally with No.3 (qv)
to the right, but with later alterations following
sub-division. c1700 or earlier in origin. Mixed construction,
mostly mass wall with some timber-framing. Front elevation of
local grey limestone rubble with brick dressings, right
return, under cartway, timber-framed; slate roof, gabled at
ends. Plan: single-depth plan, 2 rooms wide, winder stair to
rear. Door on right return which is under cartway to right.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front. Ground-floor
window right 4-light casement 3 panes per light with a
segmental brick arch. Ground-floor window left 2-light
casement with 8 panes per light and a flat brick arch. 2
first-floor 3-light casements, 3 panes per light with timber
lintels. C20 door under cartway to right. The cartway is lined
with a bead-moulded plank-and-muntin screen (a rare survival),
lower part obscured by later horizontal boarding. INTERIOR:
modernised but retaining C19 winder stair with landing to
rear. Roof: probably C18 with steeply cambered halved pegged
collars, principals halved and pegged at the apex, trenched
purlins.
