Shop with house above. Late C18/early C19, some C20
alterations. Mixed construction; stone rubble party walls and
plastered timber-framed front; left end stack with rendered
brick chimneyshaft; slate roof.
PLAN: One room wide and 2 rooms deep with passage along right
party wall.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; one-window range. Plastered front is
lightly blocked out as ashlar. Ground floor has altered C19
timber 2-bay shop front without glazing bars and right end
recessed doorway, now containing a C20 door. First and second
floors each contain single mid C20 three-light window without
glazing bars. Timber modillion eaves cornice. Roof between
adjoining properties.
INTERIOR: Not inspected but likely to be of interest.
HISTORY: Foss Street represents the line of a medieval dam
which included a tidal mill. The mill pond was filled in and
developed around 1820-30, although houses had been built along
the Foss from the C17 onwards.
