The Wellington Public House

Public House. Probably C17 or earlier, remodelled in C19.
MATERALS: rendered, stone rubble walls. Slated roofs; some red
crested ridge tiles to right of front roof. Rendered chimney
with good pot on rear roof slope, to right, red brick chimney
on rear gable of right wing.
PLAN: U-shaped plan; single-depth front range with 2 long rear
wings. There appears to have been a cart entrance (now
infilled) through front range, off-centre to right.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Plain, 5-window front with masonry
markings; pilaster strip at each end. Ground storey windows,
irregular in size and height, have mostly plain sashes, except
that the left-hand window has single glazing bar in upper sash
and third window from left has a 2-paned fixed sash. Wide
doorway, in second bay from right, has 4-panelled double
doors. Upper storey windows have 2-light 8-paned wood
casements; external wooden shutters, probably added in late
C20.
Rear courtyard has old sash windows, mostly with single
glazing bars to each sash.
INTERIOR inspected only in public bars on ground floor.
Exposed masonry; no features of particular interest.
The building is the best of the pre-C19 vernacular buildings
now surviving in the main street.
