10/11/78 The Wilderness and The Chestnuts
GV II
House, now two houses. Late C18 incorporating earlier
fragments. Pebbledash render with Welsh slate roof. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: elevation to street is The Wilderness: 3 storeys,
one window with lower left pent extension 2 storeys, one
window. Right return to garden 2 windows in the Wilderness, 3
in The Chestnuts. The Wilderness has c1930 part-glazed door
and semicircular overlight with plain radiating glazing bars
in doorcase of pilasters and open pediment; mullioned 2-light
window at left in pent extension, and another without glazing
bars above to left of door; wide window on each floor, on
ground floor a 2-light casement with low sill, on first a wide
sash, on third a 2-light casement breaking eaves under shallow
dormer with wedge sides. Steeply pitched roof has moulded
kneeler at front of right gable coping. Right return has
tripartite shallow bow windows on ground and first floors with
curved sashes and some early glass, that on first with
entablature, and casment on third floor rising into gable. To
right of gable the Wilderness has partly glazed door at left
and Yorkshire sliding sash at right on ground floor; wide sash
above; and 2-light casement breaking eaves under shallow
dormer. The Chestnuts has renewed door at right in plain
reveals under gabled hood; sash windows, that to left of door
a very shallow bow; small plain sash over door. All windows
have painted stone sills, most have glazing bars.
INTERIOR shows some window shutters, some early C19 chimney
pieces; at rear of The Wilderness fragments of an older
building show in irregular walls and a low, bowed truncated
beam.
