Terrace of 5 shops and offices. 1867 and 1872. By WH Hawtin.
Limestone ashlar, brick with limestone dressings to the side,
party wall stacks, roof not visible. Double-depth plan. 4
storeys and 2-storey basement; 10-window range. An elaborate
near-symmetrical front with a lower 3-window right-hand block
and 2-window left-hand block set back; C20 shop fronts divided
by square piers with foliate capitals, an early C20 shop front
to Nos 12 & 14 with bowed glass and plaster ceiling.
First-floor cornice, second- and third-floor sill bands,
fourth-floor string and a dentil cornice, ramped down to the
right-hand block. Tripartite windows to the centre; elaborate
architraves and moulded surrounds to each floor, with
semicircular-arched first-floor windows with granite
dressings, segmental heads to outer second-floor sections,
flat-headed the rest, with pediments to central second-floor
section, and first floor of the right-hand section. The brick
right return drops down 2 storeys to Frogmore Street, of
coursed Pennant rubble. 2:3 windows, the right hand projecting
1 window deep, window surrounds as the front. Plate-glass
sashes. INTERIOR: flight of steps with wreathed rail and
cast-iron newel, and upper rear open-well stair.
