Terrace, c.1849-50. Part of extensive gardens by Sir Charles Barry for Sir
W.F. Middleton, Bart. The terrace extends almost the full width of the west
elevation of Shrubland Hall, giving access from the earlier terrace at 1st
floor level to the lower Balcony Garden. Cream limestone ashlar. A central
flight of steps leads down to the Balcony Garden, the lower steps fanned out
to give a semi-circular plan. The open balustrading has square piers bearing
gadrooned or swag-carved urns, some of which only have the bases surviving.
On either side is a 5-bay retaining wall with vermiculated rusticated piers
and fielded panels. The balustrading returns cowards the house at the north
and south end, with short flights of steps. A gun captured in 1855 by Admiral
Sir A. Broke-Middleton stands upon the terrace, with a table nearby to explain
its origin.
