Crematorium chapel. 1892, by Edward Salomons and A.Steinthall.
Buff terracotta, tiled roof. Rectangular plan on
south-west/north-east axis, with entrance at south-west end
and chimney tower at north-east corner. Basilican style. Four
main bays. The gabled facade has a projecting gabled porch
which has a tall round-headed entrance arch on coupled columns
with slightly zig-zag fluting and heavily ornamented caps, a
panelled soffit and enriched extrados, a Lombard frieze to the
gable, and a square-headed inner doorway with semi-circular
tympanum; and above the porch, blind arcading with slender
columns and heavily carved caps. The sides have arcaded
cloisters (in effect, aisles turned inside out), with
round-headed arches on circular columns, the inner walls lined
with memorial plaques, and tiled roofs hipped at the south
end; and a pilastered clerestory with a Lombard frieze and 3
round-headed clerestory windows to each bay. The tall
chimney-tower is square, with pilastered corners, a short top
stage with arcaded 3-light windows, Lombard frieze to the
cornice, and steeply-pitched mansard roof with a
segmental-pedimented vent in each side. (C20 processing plant
attached at north-east corner.) Interior: walls lined with
memorial plaques; detached shafts to clerestory windows;
barrel roof.
