Sheep Market Office
II
Former office to Sheep Market, now disused. Mid C19. Flemish
bond brickwork, tile roof. A single room, attached to the S
flank of The Albion (not included), on rhomboidal plan, gable
to the street, with splayed corner, and a bell turret. The
street front has a stone coped gable over a 2-light cast-iron
fixed casement with horizontal bars to a stone flush lintel
and stone cill. The right return has a plank door under a
3-pane transom-light. The splayed corner has an angled 'bay'
in 4:9:4 panes, under the projecting roof. A dilapidated
timber turret to tent-roof octagonal crown formerly housed a
bell. The corner stack serves a small fireplace in one corner
of the room.
The building, which is shown on the 1883 Ordnance Survey map,
appears to have been a checking office associated with the
market activities; it is a historical reminder of this
activity, now removed from the town.
