Tunstall Hope Lodge

Small villa, possibly lodge to former Tunstall Hills
racecourse. c1840. Render with painted ashlar dressings; roof
of graduated Lakeland slates with painted chimney. Classical
style. One storey, 2x2 windows and lower rear wing with later
extension. Side steps up to central Tuscan porch which has
pronounced entasis to columns and pilasters with simplified
upright acanthus leaves on necking; entablature has low-relief
swags on frieze; 6-panelled door; segmental cellar arch in
porch base. High plinth, reducing as land rises to rear,
supports wide angle pilasters with banded rustication; renewed
fixed lights with glazing bars have plain stone surrounds
which rise from plinth, forming aprons. Top entablature.
Low-pitched hipped roof has 2 round-headed dormers at front,
and similar pair at rear, with plain casements; central wide
square chimnay has pilasters and cornice, and tapered square
corniced pots.
