Dwellings over shops. Circa 1800, extended soon after, some
shop front sadded early C20. Painted brick, very shallow pitch
concrete tile roofs with slight change in pitch over No 3,
hipped to right, coped verge left with rendered stack, another
stack above the junction of the two planes of the facade of No
3. Plan: terrace of 2 houses; probably No 1 erected first, and
No 3 added subsequently as 2 units with an angled facade to
bring it in line with No 5 (qv) adjoining. Three storeys, 4
bays, facade at an angle in centre of No 3, secured by iron
ties at upper level; end bays right blocked, segmental-headed
12-pane sash windows, ground floor left with remains of early
C20 shopfront, decorative lintel to glazed door, late C20
shopfront adjoining with inserted C20 Georgian-style door, No
1 with early C20 double shopfront with decorative spandrels to
windows, inserted pillar to right of entrance supporting
bressumer of ground floor opening, 2 steps to half-glazed
door. Right return: north-west front, one window to each
floor, 16-pane sash windows above 6-light shopwindow with
pilaster surround, half-glazed double doors with moulded
panels. This, the earliest of the shopfronts, was blocked when
the early C20 shopfront, similar to others in Bridge Street
(not included), was inserted in the Chapel Street elevation.
Interiors not seen. Forms part of an interesting group with
The BridgeHotel (qv) and No 5 High Street (qv).
