08/01/59 Memorial to the 79th Regiment

II*

War memorial. Erected 1766 by General Draper, moved 1882.
Portland stone and purple slate. Rectangular plinth with angle
buttresses, surmounted by a sarcophagus with scrolled brackets
at the corners, and an urn with a flame. HISTORICAL NOTE:
erected in the garden of Manilla House by its owner, the
General, to commemorate the Indian part of the Seven Years War
1759-62. Moved when Manilla Road was built. A very early war
memorial.
