Stable range and cottage. Late C18, extended in C19. Red brick
in Flemish bond, roofed mainly with handmade red clay tiles,
some red clay pantiles. Main range facing SSW, comprising
coach house and stables, with loft over. Coachman's cottage
forms wing to rear of right end, facing ESE, with stack in
rear wall.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. The main elevation of the main building
(facing Jericho Priory (qv)) has on the ground floor 3
casements with semicircular brick arches and marginal lights,
and one blocked similar aperture; one casement at half-height
near right end, with segmental brick arch; double doors in
middle for coach, one wide halved door to left, one wide plain
door to right, each to a set of loose boxes; plain loading
door on first floor, all with segmental brick arches; arch
rebuilt over left door, repointed with cement mortar over
right door. Mounting block against wall near right end,
comprising 2 stone steps on brick. The brickwork of this
elevation and the left gable end (towards Church Street) has
many blue headers, forming a regular pattern. Dentilled brick
cornice across each gable.
The left end has double plain loading doors on the first
floor, and C19 moulded bargeboards. The cottage has in the E
elevation one sash of 6:6 lights with segmental brick arch,
and on the first floor one C19 casement. The cottage is roofed
with machine-made red clay tiles. The rear elevation of the
main range has on the ground floor 2 windows similar to those
at the front. Several cast-iron vents.
INTERIOR: in the left (W) end is a set of 4 mid-C19 loose
boxes complete with vertically boarded walls and partitions,
sliding doors suspended from rollers, iron grills, acorn
finials on the posts, and cast-iron corner hayracks; blue
stable bricks on floor. The right end was similar, but all the
fittings have been stripped out except the vertical boarding
on the walls, and the blue stable bricks. The loft over is
undivided, with straight tie-beams, raking struts and
side-purlin roof; 3 mid-C19 scrolled cast-iron brackets below
the tie-beams.
