Inn, now a house. C16, probably 1520-60 (RCHM Typescript),
altered in early C17, early C18 and 1848 (C19 circular plaques on
front "Est 1436", "Rest. 1848"). Timber frame roughcast with
ground floor rebuilt in red brick partly roughcast. Steep old
red tile roof. On street front. 2-storeys, 4-windows long.
Upper floor jettied continuously. Carriageway to yard in right
hand part. C19 Tudor battened door under contemporary flat arch
with label in left hand part flanked by 2-light and 3-light
casement windows in moulded frames. Similar flush casement
windows to upper floor. End gable chimneys. Original layout
probably a large 2-bay room in middle with 1-bay rooms each end.
Present carriageway C19 and not necessarily in the original
position. Service rooms at N end with main door in present
position. In 1st half of C17, 1-storey and attics E wing added at
N end - probably a kitchen - possibly blocking the cross-passage.
Contemporary wall painting in middle 1st floor room formerly sub-
divided. 1st half C18 a new staircase at N end and quadrant
moulded panelling in upper corridor. N end chimney early C18 at
latest with stair. In early C19 wide entrance made and new room
in NE wing. Old main chimney replaced. Newel stair replaced
original at N end. Small extension in return angle and back wall
cut away when fireplace put in. SE wing for toilets in late C19
or C20. C17 wall painting of large flowers in infill of truss in
NW room on 1st floor. (RCHM Typescript).
