Farmhouse and cottage, now all one. C17, house extensively refurbished and roof
raised during early C18, later alterations and additions to rear. Slobbered
rubble walls; graduated greenslate roof, hip to left; stone ridge. 2 end
chimneys to house, one to cottage. L-shaped plan. House: 2 storeys plus
attics lit from gable; 3 bays; C18 panelled door in later gabled timber porch;
early C19 sash with glazing bars to either side, 2 similar over. Cottage: 2
storeys with single storey lean-to at right; gabled stone porch; heavy oak
studded door; late C19 sash to each floor with stone voussoirs and slate drip to
ground floor; board door to lean-to. Interior has flagged floors; reused
chamfered beams with end stops; oak staircase continuing to attic with closed
string, square newels and moulded balusters. Early C18 carved stone fireplace
with Philipson Arms: 3 Boars' Heads and Prince of Wales' Feathers. Cupboard
with round arched opening, flanking pilasters, heavy cornice, fielded and
panelled doors and interior with shaped shelves and coved head with gold painted
shell. Spice cupboard with initials and date P (for Robert Philipson also
R 8

known as Robert the Devil). Fragments of C18 panelling and old doors. Large
sheet of early plate glass set in passage wall. House belonged to a branch of
the Philipson family who are said to have been pirates although this cannot be
authenticated.
