Gazebo and garden walls. Early C18 for Thomas Hayes. Gazebo of red brick
in English garden wall bond on 3 sides; fourth side, to street, of dressed
sandstone. Raised and chamfered sandstone quoins; sandstone ashlar doorcase
and dressings. Stone slate roof with wrought-iron finial and weather-vane.
Walls of red brick in English garden wall bond on garden side; outer side of
west wall squared sandstone with ashlar piers and flat coping; outer side of
south wall coursed sandstone rubble banded with red brick. Walls attached
to gazebo enclose garden of Aislaby Hall (qv) to the north and east.
Gazebo, square on plan, in south-west corner: 1 storey and semi-basement,
1 bay. Part-glazed and panelled door, in pedimented Doric doorcase with
fluted pilaster jambs, approached by flight of stone steps with wave-shaped
tread ends and ramped-up handrail on stick railings, those on top step
irontwist. Cavetto-moulded eaves cornice. Pyramidal roof surmounted by
finial and dragon weather-vane. Returns have radial-glazed sashes in
archivolts with triple keyblocks and plain imposts; raised sill bands. West
wall approximately 4 metres high. Central round-headed door of fielded
panelling in rusticated Gibbs surround, flanked by pilaster buttresses; a
third buttress further to left. South wall approximately 5.5 metres high.
Banded with brick flues heated from fireplace in gazebo. Interior of
gazebo: chimney-piece with carved fretwork frieze and jambs. Cupboard door
of 6 fielded panels. Panelled shutters and window seats in keyed round-
arched recesses. Moulded dado rail; modillion cornice. C18 ceiling
painting, in need of restoration at time of resurvey.
