4/58 Churchyard cross approximately
- 3 metres south of chancel of
church of St Gregory
GV II
Churchyard cross. Part of shaft is probably C15 but the rest is 1913 restoration-
work by Hems of Exeter. Granite. Plain Latin cross standing approximately 3 metres
high. The edges are chamfered and only a piece approximately 750 mm in the gently
tapering shaft is medieval. The socket stone forms the top of 3 octagonal steps at
the base. The middle step includes some biblical quotation inscribed in medieval-
style lettering.
The cross was restored in memory of A M Toplady, author of the hymn "Rock of Ages"
and Vicar of Harpford and Venn Ottery 1866-68.
