Crown Hotel and stable to the rear

Public house. C17, remodelled C18 and C19.
MATERIALS: limestone rubble, steep-pitched slate roof with
stepped stone coping and moulded kneelers; brick stacks to
gable ends and centre of ridge, that to the right is
truncated.
PLAN: 3-unit plan with C19 rear left wing.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 4-window range. Windows to the
first-floor are 2-light casements under wooden lintels at
eaves level. To right-of-centre is a carriage entrance and to
the right of that is an mid C19 shopfront; this has steps up
to a half-glazed door with overlight, flanked by 2-light
windows of 2 panes each. To the left of the carriage entrance
is a small rectangular bay with an early C19 shop window of 5
rows of 5 panes under a moulded cornice with consoles to the
corners; beneath it is a barred window to the basement. To the
far left is a 2-light casement above cellar doors to a
half-basement.
The early C19 rear wing is 3 storeys; 3-window range, all
3-light casements.
The passage to the courtyard has a heavy chamfered cross beam
with an ornamental stop to the front end resting on a huge
wooden lintel to the rear and supported by an iron bracket to
the front.
INTERIOR: the room above the archway has timber-studded
partition to an axial wall.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: to the rear of the courtyard is a C19
two-storey stable block, rubblestone with a pantile roof, a
hayloft door to first-floor left-of-centre, a 2-light casement
under a flat gauged stone arch to ground-floor left and 2 wide
C20 garage doors to the right.
