853-1/2/141 Higher Trayne, garden piers, steps
and walls
GV II
Piers, steps and garden walls. c1939-41 by Oliver Hill.
Triangular faceted garden piers of dressed local stone
flanking stone semi-circular steps leading onto the brink of
the coombe. Attached drystone walls enclosing the gardens and
forming the "Italian" garden to the north. The garden lay-out
was contrived to link house (qv) and coombe together with
views of the sea and Welsh coast. A string of small ponds step
down the slope in front of the house to give reflections.
Higher Trayne forms a group with the garden piers, steps and
garden walls.
(Country Life: 29 October 1943: London: 1943-: 772-775).
