Pair of attached houses. c1800. Limestone ashlar, brick party
wall stacks and slate mansard roof. Double-depth plan. Late
Georgian style.
Each of 3 storeys, attic and basement; 1-bay range. A matching
pair, the right-hand one set forward, with outer pilaster
strips to a cornice and parapet, sill bands and first-floor
string. Steps up to left-hand doorways with shallow recessed
surrounds and deeply-set doorways with plate-glass overlights
and 6-panel doors, the top pair raised with cut off corners.
Full-height 3-light bows have panelled ground-floor aprons
with curved 6/6-pane and flanking 4/4-pane sashes, 3/6-pane
and 2/4-pane second-floor sashes, with blind boxes. 2 dormers
and single basement windows. First-floor timber tented
balconies have wrought-iron pointed-arched railings with
quatrefoils and stanchions.
INTERIOR: entrance hall with a central lateral open dogleg
stair with stick balusters and a wreathed rail and curtail,
lit by a round lantern, with a room between the stair and
party wall, semicircular-arched recesses, 6-panel doors with
reeded architraves, panelled shutters and fire surrounds.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached wrought-iron front basement area
railings and gates with urn finials, and capped banded piers.
A most distinctive design which benefits from the use of bold
full-height rounded bays with fine tented balconies.
