The Red House
II
House. 1654, dated by owner, refaced c1800. Stucco with
limestone dressings, Lias and red sandstone rubble, gable
stacks and a pantile roof. Formerly 2-unit plan with central
fireplace, now extended to an L-shaped single-depth plan. Late
Georgian style facade. 2 storeys; 5-window range.
C18 symmetrical facade has a cornice and parapet ramped down
towards the ends, forming a screen to the left end, with a
central Tuscan portico, entablature with triglyphs and a
dentil cornice, to a C17 studded door with strap hinges;
6/6-pane sashes, and a ground-floor late C19 bay to the left
with paired sashes and a tiled roof. Rubble sides and rear
with right-hand lower wing, and rear windows with timber
lintels.
INTERIOR: entrance lobby to a central dogleg winder stair,
closed by a ribbed door to the attic; 2-panel doors with HL
hinges and panelled shutters; collar truss roof with butt
purlins; formerly a central fireplace open each side between
the right-hand rooms, now rear lateral fireplace. An uncommon
C17 vernacular farmhouse given a polite facade.
