Attached pair of houses. c1850. By Charles Underwood.
Limestone ashlar, lateral and party wall stacks, roof not
visible. L-shaped double-depth plan. Neoclassical style. Each
of 2 storeys, basement and attic; 3-window range.
A symmetrical front has shallow projecting wings, clasping
pilasters to a frieze with rosettes, dentil cornice, and attic
storey with a moulded coping; side entrances and a full
right-hand elevation.
Wings have 3-light bays with balustrades, ground-floor windows
in recesses with rosettes to lintels, first-floor tripartite
windows with subsidiary pilasters, architraves to middle
windows, and incised surrounds to attic windows; sashes, some
with horizontal bars. Left-hand late C20 concrete entrance
block.
Right-hand elevation has a symmetrical 3-window range set to
the right-hand side, with pilasters and a central full-height
3-light bow. A long single-storey covered passage extends from
the doorway, with a side arcade of 3:3:2 semicircular-arched
windows separated by panelled pilasters, casements with
fanlights and a balustrade of linked rings; an open porch at
the end has a semicircular arch, side lunettes and clasping
pilasters. INTERIOR not inspected.
The detail and fenestration are closely modelled on
Underwood's Worcester Terrace (qv), especially the end houses.
