House. From 1842. By Charles Underwood. Limestone ashlar and
render, with lateral stacks and a slate hipped roof.
Double-depth plan. Neoclassical style. 2 storeys and attic;
4-window range.
Rendered, near-symmetrical entrance front in 5 sections, each
stepping forward to the pedimented centre, lower parapeted
outer sections with a moulded coping, and moulded plat band
across the middle 3 sections. Doorway to left of the centre
section has panelled pilasters to a plain lintel, plate-glass
overlight and 6-panel door. Small 5/5-pane sash to the right
of the middle, with a small 2-pane window above; central
first-floor 6/6-pane sash with margin panes, tall outer
3/3-pane sashes, and a low 4-pane attic window.
Symmetrical ashlar garden elevation has a 3-window range, the
pedimented central section set forward and banded, with a
full-width moulded plat band; later but matching left-hand
2-storey bay. Ground-floor windows have raised surrounds with
incised jambs, central French window and outer 6/6-pane
sashes; architraves above, with raised cornices, the
right-hand window set in a wide recess with sill bands and
deep frieze above.
Central pediment has 3 fluted brackets to each side, above an
architrave to a 3-light, 4-pane attic window cutting through
the frieze. The bay has tripartite windows with architraves
and panelled jambs. Central first-floor balcony has moulded
cast-iron brackets and railings. Lateral ashlar stacks, to the
left with 2 semicircular arches. INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached squared, coursed red sandstone
garden walls, and a pair of capped piers.
