Description

MALTON

SE780715 THE SHAMBLES
801-1/8/136 (South West side)
Nos.1-15 (Odd)

GV II

Row of 8 shops, now shops and market office. Early-mid C19.
Painted brick on painted stone plinth. Overhanging pent roof
of slate on shaped brackets, hipped and curved on plan at each
end; 4 brick stacks. Each shop consists of a single bay.
1-storey 8-bay range. Shop fronts consist of door to right of
shop window over brick riser. Original doors were plank and
batten, and are retained throughout, except in No.5. Original
windows were of 15 square panes and set back to accommodate
shutters, as in No.15; Nos 9 & 11 retain re-set small-pane
windows. A continuous louvred ventilation grille runs across
the heads of windows and doors; most have been boarded over
but open ones survive in Nos 5 & 9. Shop front to No.1 returns
at left end, on Market Place, with 12-pane window beneath
blocked louvred ventilation grille. Overhanging roof forms
continuous canopy over shop fronts. INTERIOR: each shop,
except No.7, retains small fireplace, now blocked-off or with
replacement grate, against rear wall. Together, Nos 1-15 and
2-16 (qv) The Shambles constitute an interesting example of a
planned thoroughfare, laid out to link the Market Place with
the newly opened Cattle Market. The shops are said to have
been butchers' shops.
