The Gables
GV II
House. 1865. By Walter Scott for himself. Red brick with blue
and yellow brick dressings, and Welsh Slate roof with bands of
dog-tooth coursing. Gothic style. 3 storeys, 2-bay elevation
to Slatey Road with entrance to left and advanced gable to
right. Paired part-glazed panelled doors up steps in porch
with parapet and yellow and blue brick voussoirs to segmental
arch with stone kneelers and key block. Shafts with foliate
capitals. 2-pane sash windows on upper floors have similar
brick and stone heads. Main rooms face Grosvenor Road
elevation. 3 gables, the central advanced with canted bay to
ground floor, and tripartite window with pediment over central
light in right hand bay. Stone bands between storeys. Upper
windows are 4-pane sashes with arched brick heads with stone
kneelers and keyblocks. Ornate bargeboards with fretwork and
pendant carried on stone corbels to central gable. Stepped
lancet stair window on rear wall with stained glass panels.
End wall stacks. Entrance gate in brick wall with stepped
stone copings, and ogee arch with Scott's monogram, date and
house name over.
