Gate piers, gates and railings to
Birkenhead Park

Gate piers, gates and railings to Birkenhead Park. c1843-47.
Two ashlar gate piers with incised panels and shallow
pyramidal copings. Plain Cast-iron gates. Cast-iron spear-head
railings mounted on low stone base wall, with scrolled braces
to intermediate rails. Part of the original development of the
park, laid out by Joseph Paxton between 1844 and 1847. The
gates are the only original gates to survive, and are embossed
with the name of the founder, Coltam and Hallen, London.
