Two houses in row. Late C15 or C16. Braced panel framing with
plaster or brick fill, some brickwork, tile roofs, brick
stacks. Parallel-plan front range with side entries: a pair of
small-scale houses, probably of one build, although the roof
surface is broken at the party wall. Each property is over an
alley, and was formerly jettied but has been underbuilt. No.56
has Hamerton Court, to the left, and No.57 has Locks Court to
the right; each has a steep-gabled rear timber-framed wing.
No.56 of 2 storeys and attic, 2-windowed, with a single
2-light raking dormer above two 2-light casements with mullion
and moulded architraves at first floor in replica framing.
Late C19 shop front with glazed C19 door, under a plain
fascia, and to the left, set back, a plank door to the
throughway, Hamerton Court. This has, to the left, a braced
framed wall, including 2 large posts, one of these jowelled.
There is a stack and a large dormer window to the rear wing;
the dormer faces toward No.57.
No.57 of 2 storeys and attic, 1-windowed; a 2-light casement
in replica framing above a late C19 shop front with a set-back
glazed door to the right, under a shallow transom-light. The
formerly jettied upper floor is carried over Locks Court to
the right, which has braced framing and a post with bracket to
jetty at the front. The gabled rear wing is similar to that of
56 adjoining.
INTERIOR of 56 is more completely retained than 57. No.56 has
a C20 staircase leading to a first-floor front room with a
central cambered beam carried on a post in the front wall. In
the gabled wing the original end gable has propped principals
and a single purlin. One of the main ties is severely cut
through for a door-head, and there is a large north-facing
3-light casement, raised partly into a dormer. On the south
roof slope the purlin rises at an angle. An early staircase
may be concealed in the central area between the two
properties, but it was not possible to investigate this
further.
In 57, first-floor front is a very heavy cambered tie-beam in
the party wall. In both properties the ceiling pitches are
very low. There are several C19 plank doors remaining.
