Description

TEWKESBURY

SO8932 BARTON STREET
859-1/6/14 (North side)
04/03/52 Nos.9 AND 10

GV II

House in row, with shops. Late C18. Flemish bond brickwork,
tile roof.
3 storeys and basement, 2-windowed. At first and second floors
are tripartite 4:12:4-pane sashes, the centre light arched and
with Gothick interlaced bars to V-joint lintel and arch with
fluted key and cornice, on stone cills. The ground floor has,
to No.9, a C19 two-pane shop front in pilasters, with a
part-glazed door under a shallow transom-light, and on 2 stone
steps, No.10 has a 2-pane shop front with recessed door to the
right, with panelled reveal. A high coped parapet over a
moulded stone cornice raised to the centre as an open
pediment, above a blank oculus with 4 stone keys. Behind this
are paired gabled roofs to a central valley. To the right
No.11 (qv) is very similarly detailed, but there is a straight
joint in the brickwork. One and 2-storey service wings to rear
with C19 windows.
INTERIOR of No.10 includes mid C19 open-well staircase and
plain beams; No.9 includes similar staircase and late C18
fireplace to front. The early C19 shop fronts represent a
notable survival.
