Farmhouse, with attached granary. Mostly late C17, altered, but with an earlier
element at the east end, and later granary attached to this. Squared magnesian
limestone, roofs on 2 levels, of slate and pantiles, with brick chimneys. L-
shaped as a whole: linear 3-cell house with continuous rear outshut making double-
depth plan, incorporating at its right-hand end the earlier element which is
of 3 structural bays on the same axis,with granary added at right angles to the
front of the right-hand end of this. All 2 storeys; main range has moulded drip-
courses to both floors, the lower stepped down in the 3rd bay and again over
the doorway at the right-hand end; this doorway has a chamfered surround and
rectangular lintel, otherwise all openings at ground floor are altered or inserted
(two 4-pane sashes and a glazed door between them), but there is a blocked 2-
light mullioned window immediately below the dripcourse in the centre (raised
position sugesting former stairlight); 1st floor has 5 mullion-and-transom windows,
the 1st of 6 lights and the others all crosswindows, and all with glazing bars.
Extruded stone chimney stack at left gable, finished in brick, and 2 ridge chimneys.
Roof swept over eaves. Rear of outshut has inter alia a large crosswindow with
glazing bars. Portion to right, 2 lower storeys, has a glazed door at ground
floor left, a Yorkshire sliding sash of 3 lights to the right, another of 2 lights
at 1st floor, a doorway to the right of this approached by stone steps rising
along the re-entrant wall of the granary. Rear of this part has a ground floor
remains of blocked brick arches, and at 1st floor remains of a doorway. Interior:
junction wall has a round-headed doorway with deep hollow-chamfered surround,
opening into the earlier element; the ground floor of this part (now kitchen)
has large beams on moulded stone corbels; the upper floor (approached externally)
has 3 kingpost roof trusses (the lst with curved principals)and curved V-struts, and
with concave braces to the ridge; a chimney stack has been inserted between the
other 2 trusses, which have straight principals (possibly replacements). History
earlier part may have been manorial courthouse with undercroft; Micklefield was
the Sherburn in Elmet manor of the Archbishops of York.
