Manor House, c1600, built for Richard Danvers, with major
extensions 1904 & 1912. Limestone rubble coursed, quoins and lower
part of porch ashlar. Stone.tiled roofs. Main Block, 2-storey and
attic, symmetrical, reception rooms either side of central entrance
and rear wing. 2-storey porch. Forward wing on left, C20, 5 bays,
2-storey with attics. Independently constructed C18 brick library
on right of main block, also with stone tiled roof. Main elevation
ovolo moulded stone mullioned windows, 3-light with transom to
ground floor, 3-light to first floor and 2-light to attic, all with
hollow moulded labels. Attic windows set in large gables. Porch
also with 2-light mullioned windows, gabled with square block
finial carved with name Matthew Smith and date, 1698. Small closet
window at left end. Central stack and subsidiary stack between two
rooms of rear wing. Forward wing built to match main block in all
details, making fine group.
Interior: All rooms of main building fully panelled, with heavy
cornice and broken forward in stages over fine chimneypieces.
Stone fireplace with carved spandrels to end room of rear wine.
Good chimneypiece to library. Elyard 'Old Wiltshire Homes'.
