Pair of attached cottages. Milton End. Late C17 or early C18 incorporating parts
of an earlier building; later additions and alterations. Roughly coursed
limestone rubble with quoins; slate roof. 2 storeys and attic. 3-window front;
C18 two-light casements with wood lintels directly below eaves and C19 3-light
casements with wood lintels to ground floor. Central entrance; segmental
relieving arch over wood lintel, C19 boarded door set in left side of doorway
with a vertical 2-light glazed panel on right. Small window with wood lintel
immediately to right. Gabled dormer with 2-light leaded casement in roof slope
to right. Integral end stacks, left with dripstone and purple engineering brick
top, right rebuilt c.1980. Right gable end has 3-light metal-framed leaded
casement to ground floor and 2-light casement above, both with wood lintels.
Marivale at right-angles to rear on right facing street. Probably late C18,
altered mid- C20. Rubblestone with stone slate roof. C20 leaded latticed casements
including those to raking half dormers. C20 door. Interior. Milton End only
inspected. Central cross-passage to staircase housed in extension formed in
angle with Marivale. Plain cross beam with sawn-off tenons and mortices (moved
back but still on alignment on right side of passage) formerly had wooden
doorway with arch-braced cambered head (c.1600) in angle with front door. This
doorway has now been removed and is stored in garden shed. Deep-chamfered spine
beam to ground floor (boxed to left room with stopped chamfers. Semi-winder
staircase from first floor to attic, which has collar truss roof in 4 bays plus
2 vertical stud partitions with rendered infill; double purlins. C20 lean-to
additions to rear of Marivale are not of special architectural interest.
