Former farmhouse. Mid C16 with late C16 in-line parlour addition to west.
Timber framed and roughcast rendered, plaintiled roof. 3-cell form. 2
storeys and attics. Various C20 small-paned casement windows. Internal
stack, the oblong axial shaft possibly original. Later internal stack at
junction of hall and service end. East gable end has C20 boarded half-door.
Interior. Earlier phase, in 3 bays, comprises the hall and service cells.
Intact first floor framing with tension braces; complete tension bracing is
unusual in this part of Suffolk. Heavy, closely-spaced plain joists in hall
ceiling, a small part removed for a mid C20 stair. By the stack, a 4-centre
arched doorway. Hall fireplace has re-used freestone in the jambs. Service
end formerly divided axially into 2 rooms: plain joists; most of service
partition removed to accommodate a later stack. This section has a queen-post
roof with markedly cranked bracing; collar braces to truss over hall chamber.
2-bay parlour cell has close studding in front wall. Cambered tie beam with
cranked arched braces, one now replaced. Parlour ceiling plastered over.
Newel stair by stack, the upper flight mostly rebuilt. Roof over parlour cell
has wind-braced clasped purlins.
