Description

TM 26 SE FRAMLINGHAM BRABLING GREEN

2/12 Merriewinds
-

- II

Former farmhouse. Early C16. 1½ storeys; 3-cell form. Timber-framed and
rendered; ashlar-lined. Clay pantiles. An internal chimney-stack with a plain
red brick shaft. Old 3-light casement windows and 2 large gabled dormers. 2
plank doors, one with ornate ironwork. At the west side, a timber-framed
extension with a slighly lower roof-line, faced in C19 red brick, has slatted
windows in segmental-arched openings. On the south, a small single-storey red
brick extension. The frame of the main range is in 6 bays, including a narrow
chimney-bay. Plain, heavy timbers exposed, but the development is not clear.
The 2-bay room at the east end has a main beam with chamfer and ogee stops
with bar and an open fireplace with timber lintel. During restoration of the
house some years ago the site of a medieval open hearth was uncovered.
