Detached house. Late C16, altered C17 and 1920s. Rubble stone
and cob on stone plinth, 2-span tiled roof with axial brick stack
and gable end brick stacks, cross wing partly timber-framed and
tile-hung. Two-storey and attic, 4-window north front. Tudor-
arched stone doorway with planked door in gabled 1920s porch to
left, to right is 4-light chamfered mullioned and transomed window,
cross window and C20 steel window. Basement to right has 2-light
ovolo and 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows. First
floor has two 3-light and one 4-light chamfered mullioned
casements, 2-light wooden casement to right. Three 1920s gabled
attic dormers with casements. Attached to left is cross wing with
rubble stone ground floor with blocked doorway and 3-light
casement, tile-hung first floor has 3-light casement and attic has
3-light casement. Right return has C20 steel casement and fire
escape. Rear has two C20 French windows, one inserted in former
baffle entry to right of centre, two 5-light ovolo-moulded
mullioned and transomed windows, the right hand one of 1920s, 2-
light casements. First floor has 5 ovolo-mullioned casements with
hoodmoulds and four 2-light casements, eaves probably raised late
C17, partly in brick. Left return of cross wing, formerly timber-
framed, rebuilt in stretcher bond brick 1920s, C20 casements.
Interior partly remodelled 1920s when winding stairs on south side
of central stack removed and stairs in entrance hall moved to
present position. Hall has fine early C17 carved wooden fireplace
surround and overmantel, brought here from Wilton House in mid C20,
but originally said to have been at Knighton and made for Thomas
Smith, a clothier. Dining room in cross wing has open fireplace
with cavetto-moulded stone lintel on stone jambs, chamfered beams
with stepped stops. Drawing room has round-arched alcove with
fluted pilasters and shaped shelves. First floor of wing retains
some wainscot panelling to passage, some timber-framing retained
including a jowled post and some straight bracing, bedroom with
Regency reeded fireplace surround with paterae. Attached to left
are C19 flint and brick outbuildings, with Welsh slate roofs.
This house is main building on site of deserted Medieval village.
