4/76 The Old House
-
- II
House, formerly divided into 2 cottages. Late C16/early C17. 2 storeys.
Timber-framed and rendered with black glazed pantiles to the front slope of
the roof and clay pantiles to the rear. 2 red brick gable ends: on the left
with an external chimney-stack, on the right with an integral stack, both with
plain red brick shafts. 2 old 3-light and one 2-light casement window on the
upper floor with a single horizontal bar to lights, and 2 similar but larger
windows on the ground floor with 2 bars to lights. Central entrance doorway
with a steeply-arched timber surround and plank door in a C20 version of
Gothic style. A single storey C20 lean-to along the rear wall, and on the
upper floor a 5-light diamond-mullioned window. The brick gable and stack on
the right appear original, that on the left a later addition; if-so, this
house has a basic 2-cell end-chimney plan. Plain beam and joist ceilings
exposed inside.
