Rose Cottages
GV II
Row of 5 small cottages, in small enclave set back from road.
Probably late C18; altered. Brick, mostly painted white, with
slate roof. Rectangular single-depth plan, each cottage
double-fronted and virtually blind-backed, mostly with
external privies attached to front wall. Two low storeys, a
10-window range facing south, some with small porches attached
to the doorways, all with altered glazing to the windows, and
Nos.3, 5, 7 and 9 with small privies attached to the wall to
the left of the door, all with mono-pitched roofs; No.3
undergoing renovation at time of survey. Stone plaque attached
to right-hand corner of No.9 inscribed "ROSE COTTAGES". Ridge
chimneys and gable chimneys. Small front gardens and footpath
approach. Rear: each has one small pantry window and one small
stair-window, no doorway. History: very unusual survival of
early form of industrial dwellings.
