Pair of entrance lodges to hospital, with linking screens,
gate piers and gates. 1854; by Hayley, Son and Hall. Red brick
with sandstone dressings and hipped slate roofs; cast-iron
screens, gate piers and gates. Each lodge has a tripartite
plan consisting of a tall rectangular centre flanked by lower
square wings. Italianate style. Each has a 3-storey 1-bay
centre and 2-storey 1-bay wings in a symmetrical composition,
the centre projecting; with stone plinth, rusticated quoins,
1st-floor sill-band, prominent bracketed eaves, parapets to
the wings (each with a pierced arched upstand), and side-wall
chimneys; tripartite windows at ground floor, with corniced
stone architraves; and at 1st floor a large round-headed
window to the centre, with shell tympanum and broad extrados
band with keystone and stylised voussoirs, and a Venetian
window in each wing, with keyed architrave. Return sides and
rear similar, with round-headed windows and doorways at ground
floor. The west lodge also has a 2-storeyed extension to the
left, with a double projection in the centre and a Venetian
window with blocked tympanum. The linking screens have
cast-iron open-work piers, bar railings with mid and top
bands, and 3 pairs of cast-iron gates. Forms group with
Withington Hospital principal administrative block (q.v.).
