Presbytery and attached wall. Late C19. By J Byrne of
Liverpool (Mannex). Snecked red sandstone with ashlar
dressings, slate roof. 2 storeys; U-shaped plan with
asymmetrical, 3-bay entrance front to Duke Street, 5-bay right
return and longer wing across rear which links to Church of St
Mary of Furness (qv). Entrance front: chamfered plinth;
rounded corner on right, corbelled at 1st floor. Quoined
doorway to left of centre has double-chamfered pointed arch
and recessed door with Gothic overlight. Windows to bays 1 & 3
have rounded sills and chamfered ashlar surrounds to later
casements; bay 3 window is set beneath corbelled arch which
supports a projecting stack; bay 1 window is below a canted,
oriel bay window of 1:2:1 lights. Rounded 1st-floor sill band
to a narrow sash above the door; stone gutter blocks. Bay 3 is
gabled with gablet kneelers and ashlar copings; its stack has
bricked-up slit, offsets and string course. Left end gable has
projecting stack and same details. Right return: relieving
arches to 5 ground-floor windows as front; rounded, 1st-floor
sill band to four 2-light windows and two 1-light windows all
having plain sashes. Gutter blocks; right end gable as others;
2 ridge stacks. Front wall of house continues to left as a
screen wall, steps down over a square-headed doorway and links
to Church of St Mary of Furness (qv).
